Beyond Energy Savings

For many California solar owners, energy savings are just the tip of the iceberg. Learn how Tradeable Renewable Energy Certificates (TRECs) can turn your existing system into a recurring revenue stream.

I’ve operated on both sides of the table: supporting utilities and ESCOs delivering programs, and leading portfolio energy execution inside large organizations accountable for results.

Beyond Energy Savings

The "Passive" Income You Didn't Know You Had

If you own a commercial solar facility in California, you are likely focused on one primary metric: offset. You installed solar to reduce your utility bill and protect your operations from rising energy costs. But if you stop there, you are leaving money on the table—specifically, the value of the environmental attributes your system generates every day.

These attributes are monetized through Tradeable Renewable Energy Certificates (TRECs).

What exactly is a TREC?

A TREC represents the "greenness" of the energy you produce. When your panels generate 1 MWh of electricity, two things happen:

  1. The Electron: You use the physical electricity to power your lights and machinery (saving you money).
  2. The Certificate: A digital certificate is created that proves that 1 MWh was renewable.

While you consume the electron, the certificate can be sold separately to utilities or corporations who need to meet renewable energy mandates.

Key Insight: You do not need to export power to the grid to earn TRECs. You earn them even for the energy you consume on-site.

Why haven't I heard of this?

Historically, the barrier to entry was massive. Registering your system with WREGIS (Western Renewable Energy Generation Information System) and getting certified by the CEC (California Energy Commission) used to be a manual, "pending" nightmare.

It involved complex paperwork, rigorous data validation, and finding a buyer willing to purchase small batches of certificates. For most owners, the administrative cost outweighed the potential revenue.

How DCarbon Changes the Equation

We built the DCarbon platform to automate the entire lifecycle of a TREC. By connecting directly to your inverter data, we handle:

  • Automated Registration: We navigate the government approvals for you.
  • Minting: We convert your generation data into certified WREGIS certificates.
  • Monetization: We bundle certificates from thousands of facilities to sell them at premium bulk rates to industry buyers.

The Bottom Line

Your solar system is an asset that should be working harder for you. By ignoring TRECs, you are essentially throwing away a distinct product your facility produces daily.
